The Seattle Times
A Guide to Companies’ Political Learnings
“A book that falls in the “news you can use” category: “The Blue Pages: A Directory of Companies Rated by Their Politics and Practices” reports on the political-giving practices of more than 1,000 companies and their top executives.

Some companies split the difference in their giving patterns: In the home and garden category, for example, Home Depot is the top giver to both Republicans and Democrats (as is Microsoft in the computer/electronics category). But for other companies, a clear pattern emerges: Dell Computer gives 88 percent of its donations to Republicans and 12 percent to Democrats, while Newman’s Own, the organic-food company founded by actor Paul Newman, gives 100 percent of its contributions to Democrats, according to the guide.

The book provides a snapshot of each company that details its involvement in lawsuits, human-rights violations and global-apparel sweatshops … or, conversely, its commitment to inspection of overseas factories, involvement in philanthropy, etc.”
Mary Ann Gwinn, Seattle Times book editor
